Paint yourself a picture of a summer camp filled with amazing art work. This camp teaches age-specific art techniques, styles, and mediums using individual and small-group instruction. Whether you’re a beginning artist or already familiar with many techniques, this camp will offer you new and exciting ways to express your artistic vision.

Curriculum Areas Include

• Polymer Clay: Campers create sculptures, decorative masks, vases, artistic jewelry pieces and mosaics. Standard techniques of clay sculpting and armature building help create new and exciting projects.
• Beyond the Rainbow-Painting: Campers learn various techniques of painting through watercolor, tempera, acrylic paints and multimedia paint projects. Each student experiences methods of mixing paints and shading, and 2-D and 3-D projects are addressed while learning different brush strokes.
• Cartooning for Graphic Storytelling:
  • Grades 2-5 Students learn how to design their own original characters and through the medium of comics, tell simple stories using the four panel comic strip. Students are encouraged to be as original as possible and emphasis is on creating comic strips that are easy to read. Students also learn some basic comic strip design and composition principles to help them tell stories.
  • Grades 6-10 Students learn to create comic book art and illustration for publication. Techniques such as penciling, inking, page layout and drawing fundamentals are taught in the service of telling stories. Students also learn how to create work for publication. The goal of the class is to create and anthology comic book of student work by the end of the session.

The Hofstra Summer Camps cartooning workshop allows experienced cartoonists as well as those who are new to cartooning to learn the process from creation to publication. Campers create their own characters, write and draw their own stories, and create color comics. The culminating project is a collaborative comic book.

Students will learn the basics of creating large format artwork and how to plan, design and execute murals using a variety of mediums. Projects will vary in approach, from spontaneous drawing to fully realized murals on paper or board using pencil, markers, paints and collage techniques. Students will be encouraged to experiment with materials before applying them to their finished work and will also learn how to create scale drawings for their mural as a planning tool before starting on the full size work. Imagination, composition, and collaboration will be emphasized and encouraged.
