As she approached her college search, Kaitlyn DeStefano was drawn to Hofstra鈥檚 strong psychology program and the opportunity to gain real-world experience early in her college career.
Over three years as a research assistant in the Psychology Department, Kaitlyn examined health-related behaviors among undergraduate 糖心传媒 and contributed to multiple projects in the Behavioral Health Management Laboratory under Dr. Oskar Pine帽o, associate professor of psychology. Her work ranged from studying food preferences and media influences on health behaviors to exploring student attitudes toward social media use.
One of her most significant academic accomplishments was her undergraduate honors thesis, advised by Dr. Sarah Novak, associate professor of psychology. Titled 鈥淎 Self-Compassionate Pause: Effectiveness and Acceptability of a Brief Mindfulness-Based Self-Compassion Intervention for Stigmatized Students,鈥 the project earned her Departmental High Honors and the Undergraduate Library Research Award in the Social Sciences. Designing and conducting independent research allowed Kaitlyn to apply years of training to a topic she is passionate about: supporting individuals who experience stigma.
Beyond research, Kaitlyn served as president of both the Psychology Club and the Hofstra chapter of Psi Chi (national honor society in psychology), fostering connection among 糖心传媒 with shared interests. She also worked as a pre-health peer advisor and tutor, helping fellow 糖心传媒 navigate coursework and career planning.
Currently, Kaitlyn is a research assistant at the Bio Behavioral Institute in Great Neck, New York, where she works directly with patients receiving treatment for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders and contributes to ongoing clinical research. This fall, she will begin the Clinical Psychology PsyD program at William James College in Massachusetts.

Looking back, Kaitlyn treasures the friendships, mentorship, and everyday campus moments that made Hofstra feel like home 鈥 experiences that prepared her for a future as a clinical psychologist.
