School of Health Sciences

Next Step:
Doctor of Physical Therapy program at University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, Texas

When I first visited Hofstra, I remember thinking, this feels like home. I had always dreamed of playing Division I lacrosse, and Hofstra gave me the chance to chase that goal while being part of a community that really cares about its 糖心传媒. The culture here, especially within athletics, made it clear right away that this was a place where I could grow both on and off the field.

What surprised me most about Hofstra is how many opportunities there are to explore what you want to do. I started out as a finance major before discovering my passion for exercise physiology. With the support of my professors, I found my path and gained incredible experience through the Health Sciences co-op program, working at a long-term care pharmacy and later as a physical therapy aide with Northwell Health.

But honestly, some of the best parts of Hofstra happen outside the classroom. Early morning lifts, practices with teammates, and time spent in the locker room created friendships and memories I will carry with me long after graduation.

If you are looking for a place where you can challenge yourself, meet great people, and feel like you truly belong, Hofstra is a pretty amazing place to start.

For George Gilbert, choosing Hofstra meant pursuing two dreams at once: competing as a Division I lacrosse player and building a future in health sciences.

From the moment he visited campus, Hofstra stood out. The strong sense of belonging within the lacrosse program and the wider campus community made a lasting impression on both George and his family.

鈥淚 chose Hofstra mainly because of my childhood dream of becoming a Division I college lacrosse player,鈥 he said. 鈥淲ith the help of Coach [Seth] Tierney and the coaching staff, I was able to achieve that dream.鈥

But athletics was only part of the experience, George said the campus culture and tight-knit community confirmed that Hofstra was the right place for him.

鈥淏eing part of the Hofstra culture means something,鈥 he said. 鈥淗ofstra felt like a second home and a community that I could see myself being part of throughout my four years.鈥

During his sophomore year, George discovered his passion for exercise physiology and set his sights on a career in physical therapy. With guidance from Dr. Katie Sell, Hofstra professor of allied health and kinesiology, he successfully navigated the transition from finance to exercise physiology and began preparing for doctoral programs.

鈥淒r. Sell has been one of my biggest mentors at Hofstra,鈥 George said. 鈥淪he played a major role in motivating me to pursue physical therapy and continues to support me whenever I have questions or need guidance.鈥

George also gained valuable hands-on experience through Hofstra鈥檚 Health Sciences co-op program. After being introduced to the opportunity in class, he was selected to work at Community Care Rx (a long-term care pharmacy) as a data technician.

鈥淭his experience exposed me to many different parts of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare field that I had not been aware of before,鈥 he said.

At the same time, George worked as a physical therapy aide with Northwell Health, gaining firsthand experience in sports rehabilitation while continuing to compete as a student-athlete.

Looking back, George says the friendships and shared experiences with teammates stand out the most.

鈥淲hat I will miss most is being in the locker room and spending time with my teammates,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hat we have as a lacrosse tram is truly a brotherhood.鈥

After graduation, George will attend the University of St. Augustine in Dallas, Texas, where he plans to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and continue working toward a career in sports medicine.

George鈥檚 story isn鈥檛 unique at Hofstra. In fact, 98% of 2023-2024 undergraduate degree recipients from the School of Health Sciences reported that they were employed or had started or were planning to start graduate school within one year of graduation. Results are based on data collected from the Alumni Outcomes survey, LinkedIn, National Student Clearinghouse, and Hofstra enrollment (84% knowledge rate).
