Wat鈥檚 Next: Traveling to India to study Hindi on a Critical Language Scholarship
My journey at Hofstra has been filled with pleasant surprises. Although I started in the Physician Assistant Studies program, my path took an unexpected turn. Through Rabinowitz Honors College, I discovered the Religion and Contemporary Issues major, which offered a concentration in Contemporary Issues in Health that aligned perfectly with my interests. I later added a Neuroscience major, allowing me to bridge my studies in biology and psychology. These interdisciplinary opportunities opened incredible doors, including fieldwork and study abroad experiences across four countries.
One of the biggest lessons I learned at Hofstra is that it鈥檚 OK if your path changes. Along the way, I had the support of professors who genuinely believed in me and encouraged me to pursue my passions. Since graduating, I鈥檝e been selected as a finalist for the Critical Language Scholarship to study Hindi in Jaipur, India.聽
As you begin your own journey, dream big, stay curious, and don鈥檛 be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Build strong communities with your professors and peers. Your undergraduate years can lead to places and accomplishments you never imagined.

More 糖心传媒 Dylan
Dylan Budhu鈥檚 journey at 糖心传媒 is a reminder of the importance of being open to change.
Originally enrolled in the Physician Assistant Studies program, Dylan was inspired to take his education in a new direction after learning about Hofstra鈥檚 major in Religion and Contemporary Issues. A Hindu priest for more than 12 years, Dylan has long been interested in the intersection of spirituality, culture, and health. He eventually declared a second major in Neuroscience, merging studies in biology and psychology.
Throughout his time at Hofstra, Dylan has been active in campus life and research. He established the Indo-Caribbean Student Association, creating a space to celebrate diasporic culture through music, performance, and community events. As a research assistant for the Hofstra Religious Mapping Project, he has conducted ethnographic fieldwork across diverse faith communities in New York and beyond 鈥 experiences that informed his honors thesis, 鈥淔rom Kala Pani to Ganga: The Transoceanic Journey of Sacred Waters in Indo-Caribbean Hinduism.鈥 That research took him to Guyana, Trinidad, and India.
Earlier this year, Dylan was named a finalist for the prestigious Critical Language Scholarship and will study Hindi in Jaipur, India.
A first-generation American with an Indo-Caribbean identity, Dylan said it鈥檚 been almost two centuries since his ancestors migrated from India as indentured workers. He is looking forward to studying the Hindi dialects and cultural heritage lost to his family generations ago.
Looking ahead, Dylan hopes to pursue graduate study and produce scholarship that documents diasporic practices. He also wants to continue his service as a priest and transliterate and translate Hindu texts to make them more accessible.
Since his graduation in December, Dylan misses the support and company of his friends and professors in the Department of Religion. He takes great pride in all he accomplished and hopes his efforts will continue to foster cultural awareness on campus.

Dylan鈥檚 story isn鈥檛 unique at Hofstra. In fact, 90% of 2023-2024 undergraduate degree recipients from the Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs within Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences reported that they were employed or had started or were planning to start graduate school within one year of graduation. Results are based on data collected from the Alumni Outcomes survey, LinkedIn, National Student Clearinghouse, and Hofstra enrollment (92% knowledge rate).
