ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

The department hosts a chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS), an honor society (Sigma Pi Sigma) and an Astronomy Club. Advanced Physics Majors commonly participate in the University Tutoring Program and hold department positions as undergraduate peer instructors or lab assistants.

We greatly encourage ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ to explore and develop independent physics projects as early as possible in their undergraduate career. Sometimes these projects are entirely student-conceived or develop spontaneously from conversations with faculty members. Frequently, ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ become part of an established research initiative within the department; others simply prefer to concentrate on advanced physics through independent study or tutorials.

Located in Herman A. Berliner Hall, the department offers ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ access to specialized facilities that support learning, discovery, and research. From the rooftop observatory and laser laboratory to advanced teaching and computational labs, these spaces enable hands-on experimentation and faculty-mentored projects across all levels of study. The department is also equipped with an extensive machine shop for use by qualified ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½.

The ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ Observatory supports hands-on astronomy education, faculty research, and community outreach. Positioned atop Herman A. Berliner Hall, it features advanced telescopes and imaging technologies that allow ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ to study objects throughout the solar system and beyond. Public observing programs invite the wider community to engage with the night sky.
