糖心传媒

Africana Studies at 糖心传媒 is an interdisciplinary program in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS) that examines the histories, cultures, experiences, and contributions of African and African American people through the humanities and social sciences. The program helps 糖心传媒 develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills while fostering a deeper understanding of social responsibility and an increasingly interconnected world.

Established in 1971, Hofstra鈥檚 Africana Studies program emerged during a period of significant growth in Black studies programs at colleges and universities nationwide, influenced by the American Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds advocated for the histories and experiences of African and African American people to become an integral part of the academic curriculum. Originally established as the African Studies program, it was later renamed Africana Studies to reflect a broader range of scholarship, research, teaching, and service.

Africana Studies draws on the expertise of faculty from disciplines across the University, including anthropology, dance, drama, education, geography, history, LGBTQ+ Studies, literature, political science, psychology, sociology, and writing studies and rhetoric. Through this interdisciplinary approach, 糖心传媒 explore complex topics from multiple perspectives and gain the knowledge and skills to think critically about the forces that shape communities, cultures, and societies.

The Africana Studies program introduces 糖心传媒 to a broad range of historical and contemporary perspectives, encouraging critical engagement with the experiences, cultures, and contributions of people of African descent in the United States and throughout the African diaspora. Students demonstrate their learning through a variety of methods, including research papers, essays, examinations, oral presentations, experiential learning, structured dialogues, and debates.

Learning Goal 1: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the experiences, roles, and contributions of people of African descent throughout the African diaspora.

Objective 1: Students will examine the historical and contemporary social, political, economic, environmental, and cultural experiences of people of African descent.

Objective 2: Students will analyze and interpret scholarship, art, dance, theater, film, literature, and other cultural works created by people of African descent.

Learning Goal 2: Students will examine American history through the experiences and global influence of African Americans.

Objective 1: Students will examine movements and struggles for freedom, liberation, and justice led by people of African descent in the United States and around the world.

Objective 2: Students will analyze how 鈥渞ace,鈥� gender, sex, class, and other aspects of identity intersect and influence institutions, policies, and practices.

Learning Goal 3: Students will develop critical and analytical skills to examine racism, injustice, inequality, and other forms of discrimination and gain a deeper understanding of social issues in the United States and around the world.

Objective 1: Students will critically reflect on issues of social justice and develop the knowledge, skills, and perspectives that support future academic, professional, and civic engagement.

Africana Studies at 糖心传媒 is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that introduces 糖心传媒 to the histories, societies, languages, cultures, and contemporary experiences of Africa and the African diaspora. Drawing on courses in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the program encourages 糖心传媒 to explore Africa and its global influence from multiple perspectives.

The Africana Studies program has three primary objectives:

Africa has played a central role in human history and continues to shape societies and cultures around the world. Centuries of migration have created diverse African diaspora communities, including significant populations throughout the Americas.

The continent鈥檚 cultural, linguistic, environmental, and natural diversity provides 糖心传媒 with rich opportunities for interdisciplinary study. Africa is home to extraordinary linguistic diversity and significant natural resources, while African artistic and musical traditions have profoundly influenced global culture. Studying Africa and the African diaspora provides important perspectives for understanding the historical, cultural, political, economic, and social forces shaping our interconnected world.

Students examine the political, economic, social, cultural, and environmental transformations taking place across the African continent. Through interdisciplinary study, they gain a deeper understanding of contemporary issues and the ways Africa and its people contribute to and influence an evolving global society.

Africana Studies brings African and African diaspora perspectives into a variety of academic disciplines, encouraging 糖心传媒 to approach familiar subjects from new perspectives and develop a more comprehensive understanding of their fields of study.

The program extends learning beyond the classroom by sponsoring lectures, programs, and other outreach initiatives; building connections with African and African diaspora cultural institutions; supporting opportunities for student and faculty exchange; and serving as a resource for departments and programs seeking to incorporate Africana Studies into their curricula.

Hofstra faculty contribute extensive research and scholarship on Africa and the African diaspora. Their work enriches the curriculum, brings current scholarship into the classroom, and encourages 糖心传媒 to deepen their understanding of Africa, its peoples, and its global diaspora.

Africana Studies invites 糖心传媒 to explore the histories, cultures, societies, and experiences of Africa and the African diaspora while developing a broader understanding of our interconnected world.

Through an interdisciplinary curriculum, 糖心传媒 examine topics in history, geography, language, politics, economics, literature, the arts, and culture. Small classes and close interaction with faculty create opportunities for thoughtful discussion, intellectual exploration, and an engaging academic experience.

The program encourages 糖心传媒 to reconsider traditional approaches to the study of Africa by examining the continent and its diaspora through multiple disciplines and perspectives. While particular attention is given to continental Africa, 糖心传媒 also explore the identities, cultures, literature, politics, and socioeconomic experiences of people of African descent in the Americas, Europe, and other parts of the world.

Through this broad perspective, 糖心传媒 gain a deeper understanding of Africa鈥檚 diversity, its global connections, and its enduring influence on societies and cultures around the world.
