Deconstructing Venus
September 8 鈥 December 11, 2026
Emily Lowe Gallery
The Roman goddess Venus symbolized beauty, love, and desire. Such idealized attributes have been projected onto women in the Western world for millennia. Modernity opened a pathway for ancient expectations of womanhood to be reexamined, a questioning that was expressed through art created by women, who could share their inner worlds without a man's oversight for the first time. Deconstructing Venus is an exhibition of modern and contemporary art by women who have depicted their experiences, leadership, and activism through their work, demonstrating the complexities of their lives beyond the expectation to embody Venus. The contemporary featured artist in the exhibition is Susan Grabel, whose recent work explores the reality of the older woman’s body, unidealized and imprinted with life’s experiences.
