ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½

I have been working with international ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ in some way for the past 19 years. Prior to coming to Hofstra, I worked at another local school, where I was lucky enough to travel to 40 different countries meeting ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½, parents, and other university partners. In my current role, I am now working with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ through their admissions, enrollment, and journey through to graduation. I am looking forward to seeing each one of our ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ grow and thrive during their time at Hofstra.

I have chosen to make working with international ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ my career because I am passionate about the wealth of culture, knowledge and experience they bring and how incredibly important they are to our campus environment. As a native Long Islander, the experience of going to college and meeting ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ from around the world expanded my horizons and gave me a new perspective.

When I am not working, I am spending time with my fiancée, Steve and puppy, Piper. We enjoy traveling, and visiting Long Island’s beautiful beaches, as well as attending concerts and sporting events.

I have been working at Hofstra since 1983. My first job was as a stack attendant in the library. It was supposed to be a temporary job but 41 years later I am still here! My other positions were in the Circulation Department, Center for University Advising and now International Enrollment.

Of all the positions I have had, International Enrollment is my favorite. I enjoy meeting the ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ from different cultures and learning about their countries. Over the years I have attended four weddings of international ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½: two on Long Island, one in Washington, D.C. and one in Ochos Rios, Jamaica.

I grew up in Uniondale and watched the campus grow from a college to a university. I am an avid sports fan of the Mets, Islanders, Giants and Knicks. I collect dolls and have at least 1000. All in all, life is good!

I provide immigration services and advising for international ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ as a DSO and ARO. I also develop, implement, and manage comprehensive intercultural programs, resources, and outreach in support of international student success at Hofstra. I oversee coordination of our office’s calendar of events, including International Orientation and the Global Mentor Program.

I joined ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ in the fall of 2017. Previously, I worked as an on-site administrator at Middlebury College's CMRS Oxford Humanities Program in the U.K. and as an English instructor on the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. My experiences working and living abroad for many years have driven my enthusiasm for cross-cultural exchange and commitment to helping ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ through exciting and challenging cultural transitions.

I received an M.A. in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and a B.A. in Anthropology and East Asian Studies from Brandeis University. I was born and raised on Long Island, and love traveling, cooking, and exploring New York City.

Hi! I’m Mariam Timbo, a graduate student at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½’s Zarb School of Business, where I’m pursuing my MBA in International Business. I’m excited to be part of the International Enrollment team as a Graduate Assistant, where I support international ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ and help with the Global Mentor Program, programming, communications, and other initiatives that help ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ feel connected and supported throughout their time at Hofstra.

My own academic and professional experiences have strengthened my passion for international affairs, cross-cultural exchange, and creating welcoming environments for ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ from different backgrounds. I especially enjoy connecting with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½, learning about their experiences, and helping them navigate life at Hofstra and in the United States. I believe that having a supportive community can make a big difference when adjusting to a new environment, and I’m happy to be part of a team that helps make Hofstra feel like a home away from home.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy traveling, creating content, exploring new places, and spending time with friends and family. I’m always excited to meet new people, learn about different cultures, and discover new experiences!
