MORE ABOUT EDWARD
Edward Guo came to Hofstra with a deep curiosity for computer science and left with international research recognition and multiple PhD program acceptances – including one from Columbia University.

It was the perfect balance of rigorous academics and personal mentoring that helped him thrive. “What is unique about Hofstra is that it is not only suited for talent – it is hungry for it,” said Edward, who credits the University’s small class sizes and inspiring professors with opening doors to opportunities he never thought possible. Through the DeMatteis Advanced Summer Program in Research and guidance from Dr. Jianchen Shan, associate professor of computer science, Edward pursued research that culminated in publication as part of a prestigious international conference.
Dr. Shan wasn’t just a mentor – he was a catalyst. “He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime,” Edward said, noting that the experience not only led to research success, but also influenced his next steps: doctoral study and potentially a future as a professor or research scientist. Scott Jeffreys, special associate professor of computer science, and Dr. Simona Doboli, professor of computer science, also played key roles in his journey, offering exceptional teaching and vital support during the graduate school application process.
Beyond the lab, Edward took full advantage of Hofstra’s experiential learning programs, including the Hofstra in Silicon Valley trip, where he toured top tech companies and networked with industry professionals at Meta.
Still, some of his favorite moments were simple: sharing piano music with his fiancée on the top floor of the library and relaxing with friends at HofUSA. “I’ll miss the people most,” he said.
From classroom to conference stage, Hofstra gave Edward the tools – and the community – to reach for something more.
» Edward’s story isn’t unique. In fact, among Ĵý’s 2022-2023 undergraduate degree recipients, 89% of alumni from the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science reported that they were employed or had started or were planning to start graduate school within one year of graduation. Results are based on data collected from the Alumni Outcomes survey, LinkedIn, National Student Clearinghouse, and Hofstra enrollment (88% knowledge rate).
